Stategic Career Planning is a Trip
When we go on a trip, we have some objective that we want to achieve.  We do not start driving randomly, taking the first turn in the road or the first plane to anywhere.  When we come to a fork in the road, we do not just randomly pick one. No!  We know the starting point and our destination. We have different options depending upon the time and cost of getting to our destination.  They determine how we get there.  We may include plans for contingencies and build these into our plans (time and cost).  During the actual trip unforeseen events may happen and we adjust to these.  It would of course have been nice to have foreseen them and plan for them beforehand.  On a road trip we can encounter accidents, weather and other emergencies.  Knowing that these might occur we would be on the watch and adjust our plans.  If we are determined to reach our destination, let’s say San Diego, we have a vision of sitting on the beach and can almost taste the salty air – our mission of heading west will continue.  Any required adjustments will still keep us towards our daily purpose of heading west.  What if as we arrive in San Diego we realize we did not set a high enough goal.  Perhaps Poipu Beach in Kauai is the ultimate destination.  San Diego was still a great vision, but our mission keeps us going west.  This time we need additional tools.  Like an airplane and pilot who has a common mission of heading west with skills we don’t possess to achieve the goal.   Similar to our trip, personal strategy should be about planning to achieve our personal career-affected objectives by a desired point in time.  It should be proactive in anticipating market, technological, competitive and environmental changes.

Strategic Career Planning is about taking a series of trips – a series of trips with intermediate destinations.
