YouTube - Broadcast Yourself, your brand. What message are you displaying about yourself in an attempt to capture 15 minutes of fame?
Are you popular in terms of subscriptions to your videos because you are funny? entertaining? Hot? Thought Provoking? Outrageous? Are you translating that into a personal brand strategy that gets paid? Mix in a well done ad with a value proposition that is searchable and can you get more exposure than mainstream media? If you are consistent and add value - the answer will be yes.
Case in point this week: A search for Don Imus will pull up a YouTube post just as quick as his own (former) media outlets. By the way, I did not link the Imus YouTube post because of the language found in the comments - talk about a personal brand! I wonder how many people get news from YouTube over mainstream media? It will be interesting to see how those who get canned in mainstream media will prosper on the Internet. Many will be the start of the end of A.M. talk radio and the like. IMUS viewership could not touch the likes of Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, but will he be more popular streaming with a larger target crowd that can tune in at their convenience?
What does this mean for you if you are able to get dramatic views to your videos that in itself becomes news? Are you so talented that you can do it more than once and get a reputation that people seek out? "Classic" ad agencies and traditional media better watch out! The independent professional can reach people without you and the market will dictate what is popular as always, but now they talk about it on YouTube - the new water cooler.
