Are You a Professional Paper Pusher?

It is 7:55 A.M. on a Monday morning, traffic was a little tight; left home a few minutes late, but still beat the boss in again...yes!  Okay, better turn my monitor on...then grab a cup of coffee...all set.  What is going on today...calendar is light, good...pretty typical d...ah I hear the boss coming down the hall, she is laughing, nice!  Better pick up the phone and check my messages...I know I don't have any, but you know, I am wellll into my day over here.  Look at me go!

Who is she talking (shuffle...shuffle) with...It's Chris, that kiss-up.  I know Chris is trying to get that promotion that is clearly mine because I am in first (Again!), I will leave last, again and "work" through lunch.  You see, I am too busy to go to those stupid networking lunches and training sessions.  Sucker.  Chris is all talk about this new thing and this big goal...what am I worried about, I have been here longer, I put in at least an hour more a day then Chris and people love me here - I have many friends.  Look how many jokes were emailed to me this weekend alone.

I hear Chris was playing racquetball with one of our bigger clients on Friday...he did not get in the office until 10:00!  (shuffle...shuffle; staple) The boss is going to love that one, it is not even part of Chris' job.  Geesh.

Meanwhile...The boss is preparing a short speech at 11:00 this morning to introduce Chris to the team as the newest manager.  She is highlighting that Chris is a top producer and setting the standard for doing great things...Chris is dedicated to learning everyday and growing as a human being.  Chris may not be ready for the responsibility, but fear is part of growth and Chris has shown the dedication to learn and grow...

Forecasted internal dialog from the "paper pusher": Why do I keep getting passed over for the open promotions?  I am tired of watching these people move up the ladder.  I almost never miss a day, I always get my work done, I don't cause any trouble around here.  Wait a minute...have I been branded a status quo paper pusher?  But I...wait a minute?

Getting the job done is one thing, but being noticed getting the job done is entirely different. You have to go beyond the ordinary - which really just equals mediocre - and make sure the right people see your extraordinary endeavors. [Read More]

It's one of the easiest traps to fall into. And the first couple of times you get passed over the knee jerk reaction is to work even harder, which takes you even further out of the line of sight at just the time when you need to be MORE visible
