Often we hear of stories where someone regrets the image they portrayed online. A recent public story is that of the women denied degree over Myspace drunken photo. This might have done her well if she was a Hollywood star trying to keep her name in the press and places like TMZ.com before a movie or book release, but, she wants to be a teacher - different brand! You too may unwillingly hijack your career. This person, like many like her, did not think of the consequences of posting such activity on online profiles. Her situation will pass if that is all she did. Activity in college has not changed much since I was in school and many people have stories, pictures, etc. of behavior they would later regret. For some, not being found is bad, especially later in the career...for others, being found only in a bad light is worse. This women is likely a normally responsible young women who had a great time at a Halloween party. Her poor judgement was allowing it to be found by posting on her own profile.
A word to the wise re: your personal brand online, if you are bashing your boss, employer, former employer, lashing out with profanity and other poor behavior to be funny - the joke will in fact be on you.
