Is it me or does the anticipation of a new NFL season get more exciting every year? I am just a fan, but I know the business owners like restaurants in the communities with NFL teams get fired up for the new traffic. Advertisers, memorabilia sellers and online sites hosting fantasy football (advertisers) have a lot to look forward to.
The big driver and riskiest part of the business is the personal brand of the individual players. Advertisers stick with the brand, not the logo on the helmet because they understand the fan following is towards consistent production from the person and the logo and title is not the inspiration. That brand fails to expectations or gets confused, done. Advertiser is on to the next best individual brand.
Sure you love your team, but the brand culture of your team is as strong as the ability to attract and retain top talent and put a product on the field that earns the money required to pay top dollar...for...the individual brand who will...put a great product on the field.
I love the business of sports - so similar to any other business. Like any top paid CEO where there are few who can do the job well, athletes get to earn as much as possible because they are willing to take god given talents and work harder than anyone else to be one of few. Go Jay Cutler!
