When my wife and I saw that Matthew McConaughey was on The Big Idea on CNBC we were intrigued to see why. Because of the culture brand Donny created on the show, we knew it was not to pitch a movie. We would learn more about the Matthew McConaughey brand.
And did we. I was at the edge of my seat anticipating what he would say next. His story is cool and his insight and motivation would make for a great keynote in a future Personal Board of Advisors event.
McConaughey was in school on the path to became a lawyer when we was spellbound by a book called "The Best Salesman Ever". Changes his direction over night. McConaughey told his dad about his new direction and received the parental support with these words - "don't half-ass it".
The reason I would pay to see him speak (if he doesn't do public speaking to entrepreneurs or other groups he should) or better yet keynote my events is the way he motivates himself. We know about the values towards exercise and being the best. He went on to discuss the value of hard work including the worst jobs ever like dish washing and labor so to relate and appreciate. He thinks it is important to "get your hands dirty".
The best part was the look in McConaughey's eye when he said "still chasing the big dream" - I wonder what that is?
His advice is to have no unfinished business. He referred to the feeling looking over your shoulder because you owe someone money - get out of debt. Not doing what you say you are going to do creates poor relationships and bad feelings. Do what you say you are going to do.
Are you stopping yourself from following your dreams?
